About the World Rhythm and Motion StudioHistoryThe World Rhythm and Motion Studio started it's life in 1998 when Jenna Mitchell and Marsha Butler purchased In Motion. The purchase came with a lease to a warehouse on Francis Street with space for one studio. After several years in that space, and the loss of one of the owners, the studio moved to an old building on Monterey St. between Osos and Morro. That space came with two danceable hardwood floors. In 2002 the studio got the boot from the "space above Gigi's" (it has since been torn down), and went on hiatus. With several dance groups wandering around homeless, or with inadequate space, the drive was started to breathe new life into the studio. The studio gained a new co-owner in Mike Rutter, as well as support from Stephen Seger of Full Circle Aikido. With that combined force the space attached to the Greyhound bus station, that was formerly Centerpoint Theater, was sought after and eventually obtained. After a lot of renovation and cleaning, the studio re-opened in it's current location in 2004. We started with two studios and have since renovated another room to serve as a third space. The studio is still a little rough around the edges, but work parties throughout the year help smooth them out. If you are interested in helping out, contact us and let us know!
Studio 1
Studio 1 is our main dance space. The dance floor is roughly 34' x 30' and is marley laid on
top of raised wooden panels. There are 6' tall mirrors on one side of the room that spans 30'
of the 34' width of the dance floor. There is a curtain for covering the mirrors for performances.
The stereo system is driven by a Mackie 808s powered mixer outputting to two JBL JRX 115s. There is a CD player, an 1/8" plug for portable music players, and space available for microphones or anything else. When coming through the Parker St. entrance, Studio 1 is straight ahead. There is seating that runs along the Parker St. wall and cubbies for clothes on either side of the seating. Studio 1 also has platforms that can be pulled out for audience seating.
Studio 2
Studio 2 is our secondary dance space. The dance floor is roughly 28' x 14' and is a thick
marley laid on to of raised wooden panels. There are 6' tall mirrors on the long side of the
room that covers 26' of the dance floor. The ceiling is rougly 10' high for the majority of
the studio, with one corner coming down to 9'.
The stereo system is a pair of bookshelf speakers driven by a home stereo receiver. There is a CD player, and an 1/8" plug for portable music players. There is also an alternate portable system that also has a 1/8" plug for portable music players.
When coming through the Parker St. entrance, Studio 2 is through the paned door immediatly to
the left. There is also an entrance to studio 2 from the kitchen/boutique area.
Studio 3
Studio 3 is the newest addition to our family, and is only suitable for warming up, stretching,
and similar activities. The bamboo floor is roughly 15' x 14' and there are no mirrors.
The ceiling is 8' high.
When coming through the Parker St. entrance, Studio 3 is an immediate U-turn. Walk down a short hallway and emerge into the kitchen. Go through the kitchen and down the hallway. Studio 3 is the second door on the left, just past the exit door on the opposite side.
RestroomsWe have two single-occupant, unisex, lockable restrooms. In addition to the necessities, each restroom also has a bench and clothes hooks for changing. The restrooms are at the end of the back hallway, just past studio 3 on the left.
Lobby
We have a small lobby and ticket window that are just through the double-doors on the
South St. entrance. The lobby allows access to the booth (where the stereo and light
systems are kept) and one side of studio 1 and also extends down a hallway to allow access
to the other side of studio 1.
